長い鼻、大きな耳が特徴。首が短いため、立ったままでは口を地面につけることが出来ず、筋肉質の長い鼻を使って、食べ物や水などを口に運ぶ。水を体にかけ、水浴をすることもある。この鼻は上唇と鼻に相当する部分が発達したものであり、先端にある指のような突起でピーナッツのような小さな物から、豆腐といった掴みにくい物までを器用に掴むことができる。</p> <p>また嗅覚も優れており、鼻を高く掲げることで、遠方より風に乗って運ばれてくる匂いを嗅ぎ取ることができる。第2切歯が巨大化した「牙」を持ち、オスのアフリカゾウでは牙の長さが3.5mにまで達することもある。牙は象牙として珍重され、密猟の対象となる。巨大な板状の臼歯が上下に1本ずつの計4本しかない。</p> <p>英語で、象の鼻は trunk、象が鳴く事は trumpet という（The 雌を中心とした群れを単位として生活し、高度な社会を作っている。巨大なため成体のゾウは襲われる事は普通無い。しかし人間をはじめ天敵が全くいないわけではない。ビルマではアジアゾウの生れた子供の実に半分がトラの餌食になっていたという記録がある。ボツワナでは乾季獲物の半分以上がアフリカゾウというライオンもいる。ライオンは群れをつくることでアジアゾウ以上に巨大で手強いアフリカゾウの群れと対峙できるのである。 現代の動物の個体の戦闘力としては、トラ、ライオン、ゾウ、この三者が最強動物である。ゾウとトラとライオンは太古（マンモス、サーベルタイガー、ホラアナライオン）から最高のライバル同士であったのである。</p> <p>&nbsp;</p> <p><br />
